The Kedem-Katchalsky (K-K) parameters of hydraulic conductivity (L(p))
, cryoprotectant permeability (omega) and reflection coefficient (sigm
a) have been determined for five fresh preovulatory human oocytes expo
sed to 1.5 M dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 3 degrees C. The mean values
of these parameters are: L(p) = 0.43 mu m/min atm; omega = 0.16 mu m/
sec; sigma = 0.82. These permeability values are the first reported va
lues for human oocytes at low temperatures. The results are discussed
in relation to previous studies of human and murine oocytes.
