Abstract
One of the most important characteristics of a hospital information sy stem (HIS) is integration. It can be divided into five types, i.e. int egration regarding technical infrastructure, user interface, data, sem antic content, and functionality. These types of integration, their ad vantages, disadvantages and necessary conditions, are described in rel ation to the concept of an 'open' HIS and the ongoing standardization process.
