Magnesia-alumina spinel (MgO . Al2O3) coated on 316SS substrate with a
buffer layer of 410SS by the plasma spraying method was examined in h
ardness and thermal shock resistivity to investigate the optimum condi
tions for preparation. Among the conditions investigated, the specimen
with a 50 mu m thick MgO . Al2O3 coating by the atmospheric spraying
method and a 150 mu m thick 410SS undercoating by the vacuum spraying
method using particles of 10-45 mu m was the best in thermal shock res
istivity. This result was consistent with the metallographical observa
tions.
