FRACTURE AND PLASTICITY OF GLASS

A synthesis of the main experimental results concerning glass breaking is presented. The models the most often proposed for interpreting the m are indicated schematically. Arguments in favor of the role which pl asticity seems to play on the mechanical resistance and on the toughne ss are highlighted. Moreover, the two mechanisms of water action on st ressed glass are described depending on whether it has initial superfi cial cracks or not.
