Novel mixed-ligand 1,10-phenanthroline complexes of some lanthanides o
f the formula [M(phen)(2)(DPBS)(2)] . DPBS, where phen = 1,10-phenanth
roline, DPBS = 4-(3,5-diphenyl-2-pyrazolin- l-yl)benzene sulphonate io
n and M = lanthanide and yttrium have been synthesized by the interact
ion of M(phen)(2)(ClO4)(3) with HDPBS in methanol. These complexes hav
e been characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductances, magnet
ic measurements, thermogravimetric analyses, XPS, IR and UV-vis spectr
al studies. An octahedral structure has been proposed for all the comp
lexes, where phen is trans to phen in the equatorial position and two
DPBS ligands are trans to each other at the axial positions.
