Networking of research organizations, personnel and information is und
erway in order to organize nationwide interdisciplinary research activ
ities in fusion engineering in Japan. The National Institute for Fusio
n Science, established in 1989, is steering this effort by cooperating
with other universities and national institutes operated by the Minis
try of Education, Science and Culture (Monbusho), as the first designa
ted center-of-excellence institute in the field of fusion research. Th
e role of information networking in the entire networking effort and e
xamples of information network services for fusion engineering researc
h activities are presented, with the emphasis on those for materials s
cience and engineering.
