B. Adelusi et al., ACCURACY OF HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAPHY AND LAPAROSCOPIC HYDROTUBATION IN DIAGNOSIS OF TUBAL PATENCY, Fertility and sterility, 63(5), 1995, pp. 1016-1020
Objective: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of two methods of assess
ment of tubal patency, viz, hysterosalpingography (HSG) and laparoscop
ic hydrotubation. Design: One hundred four infertile women who were in
vestigated with both HSG and laparoscopy in King Khalid University Hos
pital were selected for the study. Complete history of factors that ma
y predispose to tubal occlusion was obtained. Patients with problems o
f ovulatory failure or poor semen analysis that may contribute to thei
r infertility were excluded. Results: The overall agreement between th
e two methods was 62.5%. However, the diagnostic accuracy of the two m
ethods differed significantly. Conclusion: It would appear that laparo
scopic hydrotubation, despite its invasive nature, had an edge in diag
nostic accuracy when compared with HSG. It would be advantageous to su
bject patients in whom HSG has shown tubal blockage to laparoscopy or
any of the newer techniques of hysteroscopy or sonographic hydrotubati
on.
