Ja. Rock et al., THE REVISED AMERICAN FERTILITY SOCIETY CLASSIFICATION OF ENDOMETRIOSIS - REPRODUCIBILITY OF SCORING, Fertility and sterility, 63(5), 1995, pp. 1108-1110
Objective: To assess the reproducibility in staging endometriosis usin
g the revised American Fertility Society (AFS) classification of endom
etriosis. Design: Visual documentation of laparoscopies of 315 women w
ith endometriosis was scored by the investigators and a blinded review
er. Setting: Patients from private practice institutional setting. Par
ticipants: Patients who participated in a multicenter trial to study t
he efficacy and safety of a GnRH agonist (GnRH-a). Interventions: Lapa
rascopic visual documentation of the extent of endometriosis before an
d after 6 months of GnRH-a therapy. Main Outcome Measure: The reproduc
ibility of the AFS classification system comparing scoring during lapa
roscopy and by a blinded reviewer. Results: Good to fair agreement sco
ring endometriosis between the investigator and the blinded reviewer w
as noted. Conclusions: Visual documentation may be used to determine t
he stage of endometriosis using the revised AFS classification guideli
nes.
