Abstract
Fe(III) complexes of two Schiff's base ligands (L(B)H(2) and L(S)H(2)) derived from benzoyl- or salicyloylhydrazine and benzoylacetone have been prepared and characterized by IR spectroscopy, electrospray ioniz ation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), X-ray diffraction, and elemental ana lysis. The results suggest that both L(B)H(2) and L(S)H(2) are acting as tridentate ligands coordinating through one of the nitrogen atoms a nd two oxygen atoms. The interactions between the two ligands and the Fe3+ cation were also studied in nonaqueous medium (DMF) by cyclic vol tammetry in the presence of acid or base for [cation]:[ligand] ratios of 1:1 and 1:2. The redox potential values are in agreement with the f ormation of reducible species involving the participation of enol and phenol functions or their deprotonated forms, according to the presenc e of acid or base.
