The microgenetic algorithm is utilized in the design of dielectric gra
ting structures. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a genet
ic algorithm has been demonstrated with a small population size, a mix
ed variable type, and an adaptive mutation scheme. A wide range of gra
ting devices is optimized with the microgenetic algorithm to demonstra
te its usefulness and efficiency in diffractive-optic components. Spec
ific examples include fan-out phase gratings, antireflection grating s
urfaces, resonant fan-out devices, and cascaded grating structures. Co
nclusions and recommendations for additional efforts are also addresse
d for increasing the applicability and the convergence rates of the al
gorithm.
