A calculation is presented of X-ray emission from the disk and radio h
alo of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. Compton scattering of the radio e
mitting electrons off the far-infrared radiation field in the halo of
this galaxy can account for the 50-200 keV emission recently detected
by OSSE. This could possibly be the first detection of diffuse Compton
emission from a galaxy which is not a bona fide active galactic nucle
us.
