A. Malik et al., STUDIES ON THE WATER-QUALITY OF RIVER GANGA AT FATEHGARH AND KANNAUJ,UP, INDIA, Environmental toxicology and water quality, 10(2), 1995, pp. 91-95
The comprehensive water quality studies on the River Ganga were undert
aken at Fatehgarh and Kannauj (U.P.) during 1987-1990. The data reveal
ed significant seasonal variations in the physicochemical and bacterio
logical properties of the river water. The remarkably high level of co
liforms, fecal coliforms, and fecal streptococci reflects the poor qua
lity of the water. Some of the Escherichia coli isolates from the test
stretch also exhibited multiple drug resistance. These pollutants ren
der the water unfit for drinking and bathing and may pose serious prob
lems related to public health. (C) 1995 by John Wiley and Sons, Inc.
