Psychiatric assessment was carried out on 95 patients who were referre
d following attempted suicide. Forty eight patients were living in an
urban area, and ferry seven patients were living in a rural area of Co
. Louth, Republic of Ireland. Suicide attempters were found to be less
integrated into community life and were mostly unemployed. Female sui
cide attempters were more commonly found to have sub clinical depressi
on in the rural areas.
