Synchrotron radiation from a storage ring is compared to black-body ra
diation. The beam-line for infrared spectroscopy at Max-lab is describ
ed. Measurements of the available intensity and of the noise are prese
nted. A calculation of the shape of sharp bands in Fourier transform a
bsorption spectra obtained with a source with a Gaussian intensity dis
tribution is given. High-resolution spectra of some small molecules ar
e used to illustrate the measurement possibilities with the synchrotro
n radiation source.
