A model of cascade-induced precipitate dissolution is formulated descr
ibing the effect of heavy ion irradiation at low temperatures on the s
tability of the metastable coherent chromium phase in a Cu-based alloy
. Both analytical and Monte Carlo simulation results are consistent wi
th recent transmission electron microscopy observations [1] which show
ed that the strain contrast of these precipitates disappeared complete
ly after irradiation to a fluence of 0.1 dpa at room temperature.
