A single crystal of Type 304 stainless steel was grown by the modified
Bridgman method. The characterization of crystallinity of the single
crystal was performed by using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy
and particle-induced X-ray emission with channeling technique (RBS-C a
nd PIXE-C) before and after the solution annealing. It is found that t
he crystallinity was significantly improved by the solution annealing
because the values of chi(min) for both measurements were drastically
decreased after this treatment. Therefore, the solution annealing is a
bsolutely necessary not only for production of polycrystals but also f
or single crystals.
