Test results are presented on two prototype systems having differing t
ape-drive mechanisms for use with metal measurement tapes for determin
ing the scale error. Two systems are proposed from these results for b
alancing our the errors in measuring the scale due to deviations in th
e tape thickness from nominal, which involve an improved tape drive me
chanism. Formulas are derived for the minimum permissible diameters of
the measurement disk, the guide rollers, and the optimum ratio of the
diameters for the unwinding and winding tape drums.
