The elastic solution for the displacement ad stress due to a pressuriz
ed cylindrical cavity surrounded by a viscoelastic shell and an unboun
ded elastic medium is first obtained. The viscoelastic solution is the
n obtained by using the correspondence principle of linear viscoelasti
city, assuming the shell to be elastic dilatational and Maxwell deviat
oric. The variation of the displacement and stress fields with distanc
e and with time is studied. It is found that in the case of a cylindri
cal magma chamber there are two characteristic times, in contrast to o
nly one characteristic time for a spherical magma chamber.
