Kaposi's sarcoma is a multifocal neoplasm that has recently yielded se
veral clues to its etiology and pathogenesis. This tumor stems to occu
r when a predisposed individual (genetically susceptible or immunologi
cally deficient) comes in contact with an infectious or environmental
agent. Recent studies have strongly supported the association of a new
herpesvirus (human herpesvirus 8 or Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus) wit
h this disease. Current approaches to therapy Include the use of chemo
therapy, interferons, cytokines, antiangiogenesis, antivirals, and dif
ferentiating agents.
