Abstract
A microwave frequency standard based on buffer-gas cooled Yb-171(+) io ns confined in a linear Paul trap has been demonstrated in prototype f orm. The standard exhibits a fractional frequency instability characte rized by an Allan deviation sigma(y)(tau)=3.7 x 10(-13)tau(-1/2) for t au < 3000 s. Microwave Ramsey fringes with a Q factor of 1.5 x 10(13) have been observed.
