The article discusses the UN activity in the economic and social field
. There is an obvious need for a strengthening of the organisation, as
well as for profound reforms. The author argues that the only point o
f departure for such a process is a wider understanding of the interre
lation of peace-oriented work, humanitarian action and long-term devel
opment. The article presents some of the forwarded reform proposals fo
r a more efficient and comprehensive development policy. Norway and th
e other Nordic countries have a long-standing commitment to this task,
and several of the recommendations from the Nordic UN Project have al
ready been implemented in the UN system.
