An efficient synthesis of 8-methylnonanoic acid (6), a synthon of dihy
drocapsaicin (1) and 14-methylpentadec-6(Z)-enoic acid (2) which is a
component of fresh water mussel, is accomplished from a common interme
diate, 8-methylnonanol (3). Grignard coupling, oxidation and/or Wittin
g olefination are the key features in these approaches.
