The heterogeneous catalytic vapour phase oxidation of toluene give ben
zaldehyde, benzoic acid, maleic acid and CO2 as products over LaFeO3 a
nd LaFeO3 supported on Al2O3 and SiO2 as catalysts. LaFeO3 supported o
n Al2O3 has been found to be the most active and selective catalyst gi
ving 80.2% selectivity of benzaldehyde at 450-degrees-C and surface ar
ea 53 m2/g. The overall kinetic analysis indicates that the oxidation
of toluene to benzaldehyde is first order. The order of catalytic reac
tivity is LaFeO3/Al2O3 > LaFeO3/SiO2 > LaFeO3. The activation energy (
E(a)) values for LaFeO3/SiO2 and LaFeO3 are 14.89, 17.23 and 23.93 KJ/
mole respectively.
