The kinetics of the reactions of some 2-L-3-Y-5-nitrothiophenes (L = B
r, OC6H5, OC6H4NO2-p; Y = CONH2, CO(2)Me) with n-butylamine, benzylami
ne, pyrrolidine and piperidine in benzene at 293.15 K have been studie
d with the aim of obtaining an insight into the role played by the ort
ho-like substituent (Y) in determining the occurrence and the form of
base catalysis. The results obtained have also allowed to gain importa
nt information about the interactions between the substituents, the th
iophene ring and the reaction centre.
