Physics progresses in many directions. Two stand out at the present ti
me, unification and complexity. Here I will try to contrast the two an
d discuss, using some examples mainly from the work of my own group, t
he very different role symmetries (and symmetry breaking) have played
in advances in both of these directions. I have spent many years on ex
periments devised to explore symmetries and symmetry breaking. In this
endeavor Ernie Henley has been a constant source of inspiration.
