During 1990 low but continuous mortality was observed in turbot cultur
ed in marine cages in France. In affected fish the kidney and spleen w
ere swollen with yellowish nodules and foci of liquefaction necrosis.
From moribund and dead animals dense pure culture growth of Serratia l
iquefaciens was recovered. Pathogenicity tests indicated that this bac
terium was probably an opportunistic pathogen.
