Two photochromic disulphonated spiro (indolino-naphthoxazines) have be
en synthesized. Both compounds crystallize in the open merocyanine for
m. The molar extinction coefficients of the coloured forms have been c
alculated and the rate constant kb for the thermal bleaching measured.
The presence of sulphonic groups lowers the kb value by two orders of
magnitude with respect to that of the unsubstituted compound.
