Reaction of bis(dichlorophenylstannyl)propane (PhCl(2)Sn)(2)(CH2)(3) w
ith Na2S gives the dimeric compound [(PhSSn)(2)(CH2)(3)](2) (1) which
has been shown by X-ray crystallography to contain six-membered SnC3Sn
S rings as well as eight-membered Sn4S4 rings. NMR studies show that 1
is stable in toluene solution with the same structure as that in the
solid state, but addition of chloride ion brings about exchange, resul
ting in the formation of other geometrical isomers. The compound [Phsn
(s(2)CNEt(2))](2)(s)(CH2)(3) (2) exists as the cis-isomer and contains
six-membered SnC3SnS rings in the solid state. In solution, 2 exists
as a mixture of cis-and trans-isomers.
