T. Saito et al., EVALUATION OF ACKNOWLEDGMENT METHODS FOR HIGH-SPEED DATA-TRANSMISSION, Electronics & communications in Japan. Part 1, Communications, 77(9), 1994, pp. 1-14
The protocol in the open system interconnection (OSI) basic reference
model is specified as a system with a multilayer structure, The perfor
mance of the network is related closely to the network configuration a
nd the protocol parameters. The authors have been attempting to evalua
te the transmission efficiency of the network using the multilayered p
rotocol, with the transmission speed, the window size, and the transmi
ssion delay as the parameters. It is assumed in the studies that the a
cknowledgement is returned at the end of each window. On the other han
d, it is seen that the throughput of the network in the high-speed tra
nsmission is affected greatly by the acknowledgement method. This pape
r notes this point and evaluates the relation between the acknowledgem
ent method and the transmission efficiency. To achieve the desired tra
nsmission speed, the conditions for the window size, the acknowledgeme
nt method, and the protocol processing time are presented.
