Using the Z-scan technique, we study the intensity dependent response
of liquid crystals in geometries where director reorientation is not e
xpected. The dependence of Z-scan results on spatial beam profile is e
xamined by comparison of results obtained from Gaussian and top-hat be
ams. Effects of response times on the measured nonlinearities are also
discussed. Physical mechanisms for the observed optical nonlinearitie
s on the nanosecond timescale are proposed.
