Abstract
Two optical methods were applied to obtain information about the direc tor configuration in electrically induced convective instabilities. Th e in tensity of the transmitted light and the contrast of the patterns were measured. Normal, oblique and 'abnormal' rolls were studied and compared for initially planar and homeotropic samples.
