Homeotropic films of a nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric
anisotropy were deformed by an electric field, in the presence of a t
ransverse magnetic field. After removing the magnetic field, azimuthal
reorientation of the director was observed. The kinetics of the reori
entation process was investigated under various circumstances. The obs
ervations can be interpreted assuming a small pretilt of the director
at the boundaries.
