Dysthymia has been cited in the psychiatric literature since the late
1800s but has been subject to important conceptual changes in recent y
ears. These changes have, in turn, led to a gradual shift in the appro
ach to treatment of dysthymia and to a slow increase in the recognitio
n of the serious and disabling nature of the condition. In this review
we describe the current concept of dysthymia.
