The concept of vocational script development is discussed as a narrati
ve developmental and interpretive paradigm. The paradigm is considered
central to satisfaction with retirement from active employment and is
convergent with several theoretical perspectives. Personality and adu
lt development theory, constructivist approaches, and vocational psych
ology/career development approaches support the concept of script as a
therapeutic tool. Current ideas within these theories advance the app
lication of script theory to retirement planning research and counseli
ng. The response of employed people to retirement routine and activity
is conceived of as further development of the vocational script, with
implications for theorists, practitioners, and researchers.
