Abstract
A model-driven approach is introduced which can support enterprise-wid e integration, by classifying and structuring different types of desig n and build decisions associated with the life cycle of integrated man ufacturing enterprises (IME). The paper describes how this approach ca n be implemented through adopting the formalism of currently available reference architectures within workbenches which support each aspect of the IME life cycle. The paper also reviews the terminology underlyi ng the approach. Finally, outstanding areas of research are identified which could lead to a more complete coverage of the IME life cycle.
