A quantum mechanical description of optical soliton propagation in non
-linear Kerr media is presented, based on a finite-dimensional Hamilto
nian approach. The method consists in applying standard first quantiza
tion rules to a finite number of pairs of suitably chosen parameters w
hich characterize the propagation field and are conjugate Hamiltonian
variables. This simple approach allows us to introduce a new definitio
n of the quantum soliton state.
