The new combination Stereocaulon plicatile (Leight.) Fryday & Coppins
is made for a previously enigmatic crustose lichen with submuriform as
cospores; the basionym, Lecidea plicatilis Leight., was previously mis
applied to a norstictic-acid containing species of Rhizocarpon. The sy
stematic position of the crustose Stereocaulon leucophaeopsis group is
discussed. (C) 1996 The British Lichen Society
