Abstract
The radiological hazards of utilizing tungsten for diverters are inves tigated. The safety and environmental characteristics are assessed by an integrated approach coupling the evaluation of activation and triti um inventories, accident thermal transient analysis, mobilization of a ctivated materials, and dose dispersion. The activation products can c ontribute a significant amount of mobilized dose in accidents while sh allow burial for waste disposal is acceptable. Observations of trends that improve the safety and environmental performance are discussed.
