Abstract
After summarizing essential features of antiferroelectric liquid cryst als (AFLCs), recent progress in the application of AFLC for displays a nd spatial light modulators is presented. These devices are based on t he electric-field-induced antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transi tion characterized by sharp threshold and hysteresis.
