This work reports on the synthesis, microstructural characterization a
nd mechanical properties of nanocrystalline NiAl materials. Nanoscale
crystallites of NiAl were formed by high energy milling of pre-alloyed
powder, with and without Al2O3 particulate additions, under an Ar atm
osphere. Consolidation of the powders was accomplished by die-forging
and re-forging at < 0.5 T-m in air. Characterization of the powders an
d consolidated microstructures and Vickers hardness data are reported.
Analysis of the hardness data indicates that the majority of the stre
ngthening is due to the refined microstructure.
