Alkoxy-derived coatings of titanium oxide, up to 40 mu m thick were pr
epared on Ti6Al4V surgical alloy substrates in methanolic electrolytes
at room temperature by an electrochemical method. The chemical compos
ition and structure of these coatings were determined by X-ray photoel
ectron spectroscopy (XPS), glancing angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) and
scanning electron microscopy (SEM). As-prepared oxide coatings were de
nse, adherent and essentially non-stoichiometric. X-ray diffraction an
alysis indicated that the oxide coatings may consist of ultrafine crys
tallites. These coatings exhibited considerable plastic deformation at
room temperature.
