Pure niobium powder was milled in a SPEX 8000 mill using hardened stee
l balls for I to 6 h. The X-ray diffraction peaks were analyzed using
the Fourier Line Shape and Integral Breadth analysis techniques. The c
rystallite size decreased to 2.3 nm after 6 h of milling and a high de
gree of isotropy was observed in both the effective crystal size and m
icrostrains. This behavior is significantly different from the bulk Nb
metal, which is anisotropic.
