A postal survey was undertaken of all women who had had Norplant fitte
d at the author's surgery within the first nine months of its launch.
There were 36 respondents. The main reasons for choosing Norplant were
convenience and long term contraception. Users were generally well ex
perienced with other forms of hormonal contraception. Although menstru
al irregularities were reported by the majority of respondents, and de
spite the fact thar a number of women found the fitting of Norplant un
pleasant, most would still recommend the method ro their friends. The
importance of patient selection and adequate counselling are discussed
.
