Abstract
A general valence force field is determined from the experimental vibr ational frequencies and elastic constants of alpha-Al2O3 in order to r elate the macroscopic elasticity of this material to its microscopic e lasticity characterized by the bond-stretching and angle-bending force constants. The evolution of the frequencies, elastic constants, and f orce field as a function of temperature is discussed. (C) 1995 Academi c Press, Inc.
