This paper reports the results obtained in the Knoevenagel condensatio
n between benzaldehyde and malononitrile using various alkaline and al
kaline-earth carbonates as catalysts. Within each carbonate series, th
e catalyst basicity increases with increasing ionic radius of the meta
l. Also, the catalytic activity increases with increase in the solid b
asicity.
