The absorption spectrum of zwitterionic hemicyanine dyes is shifted to
the blue and their fluorescence spectrum is shifted to the red by sol
vents of high polarity. This symmetrical solvatochromism is rationaliz
ed by a Born-Marcus-type theory of reversible charging for the positiv
e chromophore alone which is described by an electrical point charge a
nd an electrical point dipole in the center of a sphere.
