Aging is associated with significant changes in the anatomy of the thy
roid gland and in the physiology of hypothalmic-pituitary-hormone thyr
oid axis. In addition, tissue responsiveness to thyroid hormone may al
so be altered with age. However, ge alone should not influence the int
erpretation of commonly obtained thyroid function tests. The reduced t
hyroid hormone clearance with age explains the reduced daily replaceme
nt doses of thryoxine in hypothyroid elderly subjects.
