The peculiarities of ethanol self-diffusion in silica gels of differen
t concentrations were studied by the quasi-elastic neutron scattering
method. The full self-diffusion coefficient and also its components, w
hich correspond to collective and single-particle diffusion modes of s
olute molecules, were determined. It was established that scattering o
il obstacles (monomers) influences the collective motion of ethanol mo
lecules, while their single-particle diffusion is characterized mainly
by hydrodynamic self-interactions of diffusible molecules.
