The small waterstriders of the subfamily Trepobatinae have radiated ex
tensively on New Guinea and surrounding archipelagos. The present cont
ribution is the third in a series of reports dealing with this endemic
fauna and reviews the tribe Trepobatini, proposed in Part 1 of this s
eries to hold the genera Trepobates Uhler, type genus, plus Cryptobate
s Esaki, Cryptobatoides J. Polhemus, Gnomobates gen. n., Halobatopsis
Bianchi, Ovatametra Kenaga, Telmatometra Bergroth, Telmatometroides J.
Polhemus, and Trepobatoides Hungerford and Matsuda. A key to genera i
s provided, followed by synonymies, diagnoses and discussion of the co
nstituent genera, and a revision of the genus Cryptobates, one of the
two Old World genera in the tribe. The following new taxa are proposed
within Trepobatini: Cryptobates johorensis sp. n. from Peninsular (=
West) Malaysia, C. rufus sp. n. from Singapore and West Malaysia, and
Gnomobates gen, n., including only the type species Cryptobates kuiter
ti Hungerford and Matsuda from India, Myanmar (= Burma) and Thailand (
as Gnomobates kuiterti, comb. n.). Habitat and distributional data are
given for these taxa, accompanied by a key, figures of key characters
and distribution maps.
