Abstract
The study highlights some aspects of socio-demographic features of Tar aos, a small tribe in Manipur. The exact population of Tarao tribe was altogether 532 persons as on 10-12-1988 distributing in 101 household s and inhabiting in four villages, all in Chandel district, Manipur. A t the most possible levels of study attempts have been made to highlig ht the socio-demographic profile of the people with an emphasis on the ir population growth. Most scholars often talk to them as one of the d windling tribes in north-east India. Therefore this study has speciall y been carried out to pin-point the possible factors for either growth or decline in population corresponding with various phases of contact and assimilation with different cultures, yet they could maintain the ir own identity and new emerging forces of change have also been broug ht out to give a light for overall evaluation.
